Attention all high schoolers!
Beginning with the class of 2012, or those who began high school in the fall of 2008, Arizona’s minimum high school graduation requirements have been increased. For the class of 2013 (those who begin 9th grade in the fall of 2009), the requirements are going up even more.

Homeschoolers in Arizona are not required to match the state graduation requirements, so in one sense, this may be irrelevant to them unless the student will go back to public high school part way through. I always tell students to look at the college entrance requirements and use that as the guage. Up to this point, Arizona’s basic standards were significantly lower than those of ASU, although many high schools have had a two-tiered diploma program–basic state minimum and college prep.
Now, with the minimums increasing, I asked ASU if their entrance competencies would also be increasing. At this point, there is no plan to make that change. By 2013, the state graduation and ASU entrance minimums will be almost the same, except that the university also requires two years of foreign language.
Credits needed for entrance to Arizona state universities (ASU, U of A, NAU:
- English: 4 credits
- Mathematics: 4 credits
- Science: 3 credits
- Social Studies/History: 2 credits
- Foreign Language: 2 credits
- CTE (Computer Technology) or Fine Arts: 1 credit
- Electives: 4 credits
- Total: 20 credits
