Rep. Shadegg challenges President Obama’s plan on releasing Gitmo terrorists

Representative Shadegg, Thank you for standing up on this issue.  Our legislators are mandated to look to the safety and well-being of our citizens first and foremost.  Those who endeavor to destroy our country with our rights and freedoms do not deserve special privileges that are reserved for American citizens.

Shadegg: Obama Dangerously Wrong on Gitmo –

‘Mr. President, Show us the Proof’

Shadegg: “We can’t justify subjecting our families and fellow citizens to the enormous threats posed by housing these terrorists here when keeping Guantanamo Bay open eliminates those threats.  It is the ultimate needless risk.”

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman John Shadegg released the following statement after President Obama’s speech on Guantanamo Bay:

“President Obama has reiterated his insistence on relocating terrorists from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba into cities and towns across America. The President says this plan will not threaten our security because ‘nobody has ever escaped from one of our federal supermax prisons.’ But the President’s logic is dangerously wrong. Once the terrorists are within our borders anything can happen.

“There is a very real risk that by being brought into the U.S. they will be entitled to legal rights, including civilian trials, they do not have so long as they are not here.  What happens if these killers are set free?  And once in prison, their very presence may become a magnet for terrorist activity.  Suddenly guards and their families will become targets – as will the nearby communities.

“Today, four Islamic terrorists were arrested in New York City.  They met in prison.  The presence of these high-value Jihadists increases the threat of radicalization in our nation’s prison system. We can’t justify subjecting our families and fellow citizens to the enormous threats posed by housing these terrorists here when keeping Guantanamo Bay open eliminates those threats.  It is the ultimate needless risk.

“The President says that ‘Guantanamo became a symbol that helped al Qaeda recruit terrorists…the existence of Guantanamo likely created more terrorists around the world than it ever detained.’  What proof does the President have of this shocking claim?

“This comment reveals a serious misunderstanding of our enemy.  How can the President suggest that our own policies are responsible for global terrorism?  American blood was shed at the Pentagon and World Trade Centers long before Guantanamo Bay opened its doors.

“Jihadists are not driven by concerns over our legal or judicial proceedings, but are driven by an ultra-violent, extremist theology.  Our strong, unapologetic response has kept us safe in the 8 years following 9/11.  Jihadists will not scale back their recruiting because we shut down Gitmo and the President is dangerously wrong if he thinks they will.

“Simply put: our soldiers are risking their lives every day to keep terrorists out of America.  It is the height of irresponsibility to then bring those terrorists here ourselves.”

Note: In February, Congressman Shadegg introduced a bill [H.R. 1238] to ban any and all detainees at Guantanamo Bay from setting foot in America.
