It is a BIG job to prepare for college! If you are going to a university or college, generally you will need to take the SAT or ACT test to be admitted. These instruments can be daunting, especially for those who don’t do as well on written tests. The good news is that there is plenty of help available, and much of it is free.
Here are some things you should know before signing up:
- When to take the tests:
- It is highly recommended that students begin taking these tests by fall of the senior year at the latest.
- They can be taken as early as the sophomore year, especially if the student has taken some advanced classes in English and math.
- Early spring of the junior year is the most common, as applications for the schools can be sent in during the fall of the senior year.
- ACT Test dates
- SAT Test dates
- The tests may be taken more than once
- Some schools will allow you to submit the best scores, even if they are not the most recent session.
- Which test to take:
- Each school of interest will have the preferred test listed on their website.
- Some will take either one, some will take one particular test, and a few will want both.
- If you are applying to a variety of schools, take both for more flexibility.
- Students stronger in language arts will generally do better with the SAT.
- Students stronger in math and science may find the ACT works better for them.
- How to prepare for the exams:
- Take advantage of the many free resources at the library and online
- Books such as 10 Real SAT Tests and Cracking the ACT offer practice tests, test taking skills and tips about the tests
- Free practice tests online for ACT:
- Free practice tests online for SAT
- Free practice tests for SAT and ACT
- Take advantage of the many free resources at the library and online
Of course, there are lots of paid tutors and classes which can also help you prepare. Decide what your budget is, how much outside motivation you need, and the time frame that you have for boosting your skills to decide whether a free practice will work for you or not.
Keep in mind that scholarships to the universities are often based in part on the test scores!
Best Wishes!
