Santorum declares public school anachronistic, plans to homeschool as president

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum told an audience today that he plans to homeschool his seven children when he is in the White House. Speaking to the Ohio Christian Alliance in Columbus, Santorum decried the government-run school system as “anachronistic“;

““Most presidents homeschooled their children in the White House.… Parents educated their children because it was their responsibility …

“Yes, the government can help, but the idea that the federal government should be running schools, frankly much less that the state government should be running schools, is anachronistic.”

Public schools have become big factories, Santorum went on to say, in which the outcome for the students is very limited in diversity. He and his wife, Karen, have been homeschooling their children since 2004, after a three year stint with a public online charter school.

The latter episode became a point of controversy, since the charter school was based in Pennsylvania, Santorum’s home state and ongoing residence.  The family was living in a second home in Virginia at the time, so residency and eligibility for Pennsylvania to pick up the tab for the school were called into question.  The home state settled the suit by paying the school district $55,000 for education costs for the five Santorum children who were enrolled.
