A hockey match can make a terrific homeschool field trip, if the price is right.
For the April 3, 2012 event between the Phoenix Coyotes and the Columbus Blue Jackets, families and friends are able to get deeply discounted tickets. Even better, a portion of the ticket sales will go to benefit a local non-profit organization, StreetLightUSA. That is a combination that could make any homeschool family feel good about a night out for their favorite sport.
StreetLightUSA is a Phoenix-based Center for Excellence and Treatment of girls 11-17 who have been caught in the sex trades. The center provides residential care, education, mentoring, counseling, and life and job skills to help the girls turn their lives around.

Where: Jobing.com Arena
9400 W. Maryland Ave. Glendale, AZ 85305
Cost: $20 upper level (normally $40), $55 lower level (normally $75)

Benefit to StreetLightUSA: $5 from each lower level ticket and $10 from each upper level ticket will go directly to StreetLight to provide direct care services for the girls in residence.
The Phoenix Coyotes provide grants to non-profit organizations who sell large number of tickets. StreetLightUSA has a goal of 1000 ticket sales to be eligible for an additional $10,000 grant. These funds will allow the facility to open up another much needed cottage for eight more girls. There are fewer than 200 beds nationwide to care for these youngsters. StreetLight, when at capacity, will house 48 girls.
Here is how you can be part of the solution to this most egregious form of child abuse:
- Set up a homeschool group night at the game. Let your friends know they get to save a lot of money and help keep young girls safe from sexual abuse for each night that one that is housed at StreetLightUSA.. (You save money on the handling fee if all the tickets are purchased at once.) Be sure to order your tickets right away.
- Download the flyer and pass it out at your work, your clubs, your place of worship. Better still, organize a group event.
- Post this information on your Facebook, Twitter, hockey club forums, and other social media that you frequent.
Can’t make the game? You can donate directly to StreetLight or become part of the Campaign13 to raise abolitionists who will take a stand against sex trafficking and support the restoration work of StreetLightUSA.
Since sex trafficking is often a side component of major sporting events, the opportunity to use sporting dollars to help restore victims of sex slavery is redemptive.
